Cannes through Magnum’s Eyes

The equation for this post is quite simple. I love Cannes Film Festival and following it. I adore photos by Magnum. Why not making a post that greets photos of old Cannes Film Festival taken by Magnum Photos? I enjoyed every single photograph selected by Today’s Picture section of Slate Magazine. I spent several minutes to digest all of the photographs, deeply. Enjoy the photographs!

Visit Slate Magazine for the rest of the photographs!

Fotoğrafların devamını Slate Magazine’in web sitesinde bulabilirsiniz, hoşça vakit geçirin!

Ray-Ban: Never Hide!

I appreciate creativity when it keeps everything extraordinarily simple. I prefer simple-accessible combination to sumptuous-rare combination. Parallel to that, I love how Internet changed the advertising world. I am talking about Ray Ban’s campaign to celebrate its 75th year anniversary, Never Hide..

Ray-Ban shows its history by a timeline of “legendary stories” that inspired its “Never Hide” campaign. Years are remarked by stories and stories are told by its owners with regarding Ray-Bans and styling accompanying these stories. Also, you can select your favourite piece from their 75th year anniversary collection and add your own story to the website ;)

As the campaign tells… “Every life tells a unique legend.”

Yaratıcılığı, çevresindeki her şeyi gereksiz derecede basit tuttuğu sürece seviyorum, takdir ediyorum. Basit-ulaşılabilir kombinasyonunu ihtişamlı-nadir bulunan kombinasyonuna tercih ederim. Bu yüzden, internetin reklam dünyasını değiştirme şeklini de çok seviyorum. Ray-Ban’in 75. yılını kutlamak amacı ile oluşturduğu reklam kampanyası “Never Hide”dan bahsediyorum..

For the whole campaign, you can visit Ray-Ban’s official website!

Photographer Saul Leiter!

Untitled

“I don’t have a philosophy. I have a camera.” said famous American photographer, Saul Leiter, to Dean Brierly during an interview. I admire artists who are not dying for explaining their works and exhibitions. I believe in imagination. I believe in sparing some space for imagination, some should be left untold. I believe that people have interpretations of same thing, truly unique to them. Saul Leiter is both painter and photographer, especially his works from 1940s and 1950s truly contributed the photography. Having a painter’s eye, his photographs arouse your senses!

I do want to share a selection of his work with you!

Evoking Lisbon!

I love exploring new countries… The thing is, as you see, I can not do it very often :) However, I would like to enrich Travel section of All Happy Things Around. One of my closest friends traveled to Portugal in late March and fortunately she did not decline my offer to share her impressions decorated with her beautiful photographs…

It is time for me to follow “quiet is the new loud” rule and let Ezgi mesmerize you with her fabulous story!

—- START—

Fact: You cannot crave for something you’ve never eaten.

Precaution: Before stepping into a trip to Lisbon, one must know that: You will only end up with more things to crave.

I remember myself freezing in the airport at 3 am in the morning, yearning for that jumper I had left in my room. It was one of the coldest winters – The act of packing has never been such a complicated knapsack problem, because I was in a point where I cannot imagine how +15 Celsius will feel like.

The convoluted battle between me and red tape had ended up with victory at last. And here I was, wearing nothing thick but everything I have – looking like an illegal immigrant more than a tourist – waiting my departure to Porto.

Skipping the details of my overlong flight – right after a small accident, which almost resulted with losing my most valuable touristic asset (my leg) – finally the Universe was paying his debt off:

The 3 hour trip from Porto to Lisbon is among my top travels in Europe. We had few minutes to sunset over Douro and everything had started with a glimpse of Porto (coincidental rhyme detected).

Old cottages covered with colorful-tiles along the large seafront – for me – was an immediate shortcut to declare stereotypes about the locals:

Considering this kind of vividness in architectural details, I was sure as a hell:

“Portuguese must be hilarious – really hilarious”.

It was the first moments of a pointless – infantile excitement, coming from decrypting hints about a country.

You may have done your homework very well; read hundred pages of Lonely Planet (and read it dozens of time), dig forums and travel sections of newspapers, download x-hour-long pod-casts…

But:

Even the most poetic, embellished phrase, is definitely not enough to define “been there done that” moments in a foreign territory.

This was the first thing that came across to my mind, while I was enraptured by the natural light of Lisbon.

Was it because of that blessed-profound Mediterranean sun (yes, protesting accredited universal astronomy – sun has definitely Mediterranean roots in my etymological perception) or was it because of the very-incredible-moment, where I was wearing something without long sleeves – All I know was: In Lisbon, life suddenly became so livable.

Reading List: Pioneers of the Possible!

Lately, Assouline published a great book, Pioneers of the Possible. This book honores 20 of the world’s most inspiring women that has changed the people’s perception towards women.

They were enablers… They believed that their existence in the world had a meaning that they should seek for to find out what it is. They were visionary and brave enough to take action.. To stand out!

Martha Graham, Simone de Beauvoir, Frida Kahlo, Ella Fitzgerald, Zaha Hadid…

Can’t wait to have and read this beautiful book!

New Math!

I feel sorry that I discovered Craig Damrauer and his works so late! He initiated an outstandingly great project, New Math. New Math basically offers new explanations to fundamental aspects of our life by using simple math formulas. It is the combination of pure creativity and unique sense of humour! Also, I think there is a certain level of criticism in his works but his way of declaring it is honest, bold and yet still very polite.

I will not tell much in this post as I truly believe that his work speaks for itself!

White lie…

Greed…

Double dip recession…

Placebo…

Veggie hotdog…

Word…

More of his works can be found here!

It Smells Good…

I am very devoted to my own rituals… No, devoted is the appropriate word, it is slightly different from obsession and mine is no obsession ;)

I am a bit conservative when it comes to experimenting new food, a new place, new color… I do not refuse the concept of experimenting totally, however, it is hard to break my resistance especially in particular situations. I love wearing black, beige, white but when it comes to other colors, I think twice.

Well.. Smells are no exception!

I use the same perfume for last 8 years.. I feel like it is my body’s own smell right now… It feels like it is part of my skin… I passionately love it and I will be using it!

I can not taste any food/spirit if I do not like its smell.. I simply can not… Rule is simple between food and me: I would eat you, if you smell good enough :)

Don’t judge me but if a person smells good, my respect to him/her just doubles itself, out of my control :)

I think the reason of me loving summer that much has something to do with the fact that summer has limitless good smell offerings! For me, wandering itself is a feast when summer is with us :)

Cities I Wonder…

Stockholm

There are 2 cities in the world that are hitherto main actors of my day-dreaming sessions… You call it either a play of my conditioned mind about thsose cities or a simple coincidence.. These days, I feel like every magazine, every website and every blog share interesting stuff about those cities..

Which cities I am talking about?

New York and Stockholm…

NEW YORK by HENRY GEHRY - SUNSET

Thanks to several New York based TV series, I want to know what it feels like settling in New York. The city has quite to offer if one can discover all of them! I just want to feel that city for a while…

And Stockholm… This city has a unique culture too and amazes me with its great its hip places, interesting shops, great sense of design and beautiful restaurants..

Stockholm Summer Life

I know you wonder that how come I can talk with such a familiarity about cities that I have never been?

Well… Thanks to amazing Stockholm guide from Emmasdesignblogg and latest and birthday issue of Est Magazine :) If you do love reading about those cities, just follow the links, I recommend…

Diana camera Lomography 120 mm film Black and White Flat Iron District Flat iron Building NY Life Building New York Life Building

Traveling makes me feel renewed, productive and creative :) A city is a evolving creature I believe, especially if we are talking about cities like New York and Stockholm! So much to offer…

GIFTS!

I'll Give You All I Can...I love giving and receiving gifts.. And.. It all starts with a self-discovery..

When I was in elementary school, I was a geek, let me say, interested in space and all kind of scientific developments.. They were breeding my childhood imagination, it was the reason I guess! I was asking billions of questions to my parents and my teachers.. Yeah, poor them!

Anyway.. My best friend, back then, gave me a book full of great illustrations and explanations about inventors/inventions for my birthday. At that time, I was the happiest girl in the world, true story. However, a friend of us found this gift extremely strange and questioned if I really liked it.

a well received gift :)

This was the very moment that there are two different approaches on giving and receiving gifts.. Be mainstream and give your gifts to satisfy everybody not the receiver.. Or.. Take your time to prepare good gift that will be really special to receiver, at the expense of other’s undervaluing.. My choice is obvious!

GiftsI start thinking about what kind of gift I will give, my A-B and C plans well in advance.. I love surprising people, seeing them happy, making them realize that how important they are to me..

Nobody said I am the easiest person in the world, I appreciate gifts that are endeavoured! Don’t blame me, I am being honest here ;)

Latest Discovery: Holly Golightly!

I am talking about a band here, not Truman Capote’s well known character from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.. This might be great topic for another post, though.. Combination of different women into one, adapted into a movie, performed by Audrey Hepburn in the movie.. So much to talk about!

Whenever I am a restaurant, coffee shop or book store, and notice that there is playing a great song that I haven’t known before.. Then I ask for it.. If I find something I love, I have never turned my back to it!

I was in a book store at weekend and loved the band that was playing.. I asked for the name of the group and they welcomed my request. Great people!

This is the story of how I met the band, Holly Golightly :)

Enjoy the song!

PS: For people who have watched the movie but not read the book, Truman Capote’s original words and narration is magical!
